Classic Car Insurance: What to Know

June 15th, 2010

No classic car owner should go without the proper insurance. Many classic car owners decide to insure their car through their current insurance agency that also insures their daily driving vehicles, and this is highly discouraged. Too many collector car owners believe that classic car insurance is expensive, but it is usually cheaper than going through your current insurer, even with multiple auto discounts. Not only is it likely cheaper, but using a collector car agency will properly insure your classic car.

Only classic car insurance companies offer “Agreed Value” insurance policies. This is the only insurance policy you should have on your classic car. Any other insurance type will likely cost you in the unlikely event of a total loss. With an agreed Value policy, you and the insurance company agrees on a value of the car, and you are paid the full amount if the car is totaled out. With other insurance policies, the valued amount can depreciate over time or worse yet, you will be paid the book value of your car. Classic car insurers know the true value of your car, and they know you will drive your collector car safely maybe even safer than your other vehicles so rates are usually low if you have a decent driving record.

Most classic car insurance do have limitations you should be aware about. One of the biggest limitations is the mileage. Most policies only allow 250 miles a month or 2500 miles driven a year. For a mall increase in premiums this can sometimes be bumped up to 500/month or 5000/year. Most policies also require the owner to be at least 25 years old, if not 30. A minimum of a 10 year driving record is usually a requirement as well. These are the basics you need to know to properly insure your classic car.

The Best Electric Cars

June 10th, 2010

There’s huge competition in the electric car market, all benefitting us, as consumers. The drive to make a better electric car with more features, stronger engines, and roomier interiors, all at an affordable price, can only benefit the buyer. There’s a ton of investment capital around for the development of clean technology, and in the car market, that means lighter, cheaper, cleaner, more efficient all the way around. The main contenders so far are American, European and Japanese car manufacturers.

That said, some of the best electric cars are as follows:

Tesla: It was the first manufacturer to sell 1000 cars in the U.S. market. It’s developing a Model S hatchback that’s about half the price of its popular Roadster (which starts at about $110,000). The cool thing is that the Roadster has a 240 mile range, and the Model S hatchback is shooting for 300 miles.

Nissan’s committing to putting over 10,000 LEAF electric cars on the road, and over 10,000 charging stations. It’s a battery-electric car with a 100-mile range.

Toyota’s of course got the Prius, and coming soon is the Prius PHV (Plug-In Hybrid). It looks just like a regular Prius, but there’s a plug for charging.

GM/Chevrolet’s offering the Volt, a plug-in hybrid with a range of 40 miles per charge, and up to 500 miles by working a small gasoline engine that acts as a generator. Among US manufacturers, Ford will be selling at least three electic cars by the end of 2011. There’s a Ford Focus EV, a battery/electric that will be on par with Nissan’s Leaf. Ford’s talking about making its Focus available in battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, hybrid or fuel-efficient models.

In the European market, look for the Converi, and Opel’s hoping to offer a diesel plug-in hybrid soon. The electric car market is only going to grow in the next ten years, so if you’re concerned about the very best technology, it might be a good idea to wait a few years until the fully electric models are fine-tuned. If you just want to start driving greener now, however, one of these electric car models will be a great buy.

History of the Truck

June 10th, 2010

The pickup truck is an important symbol to the history of the American auto. The first pickup built was by Chevrolet, the “Independence Series”. Ford released a modified Model T with a modified rear end with heavy duty rear springs, a cargo box, and a tailgate. 34,000 trucks were produced that first year by Ford, and by 1936 over 3 million trucks had been sold. Fueling the sales was the release of the Model A replacing the Model T in 1928, which now made the cab enclosed and had safety glass windshields. Also available was a 3 speed transmission. The flathead V8 was offered as an option in 1932, producing 65 horsepower over the 40 horsepower L engine previously available. The truck had grown up now with a V8 engine.

Trucks today come in many sizes, from compact pickups to full size pickups. Full size pickups are popular in America but compact pickups are more common around the world. The Ford F150, a full size pickup, is the most successful pickup truck sold in America, some years outselling the best selling cars of the year. Some of the most popular old trucks are the International Harvesters, Fords, and Chevrolet’s. Finding an International truck for sale is always fun at auto shows.

For much of the world, pickup trucks are used for hauling and carrying, but for America it has become just another type of vehicle to get around. Looks and performance have been combined to produce some truly remarkable trucks, but many still go back to the original pickup trucks. Classic trucks for sale at shows are always fun to look at and dream about, and some old models are hard to find. With a newer truck you will have looks and performance, but on a classic truck the beauty is in the looks and less with performance.

If You Can Spare a Cool Seven Million, Then You Can Get Your Hands On One Of James Bond’s Used Cars

June 9th, 2010

Most men wanted to be James Bond when they were growing up and in fact many of them still do. Who wouldn’t want to be like this suave manly man? There are a number of reasons for this such as the fact that women fall over themselves for him and the fact that he has such an exciting life. One of the other great things about this hero is that he gets to drive the best cars in the world. Well for one lucky James Bond fan, the opportunity to get his hands on a genuine 007 car might soon be a reality but it comes with a hefty price tag of £7 million. There will rarely be another used car which will be so sought after by so many people.

In Goldfinger James Bond was played by Sean Connery and the 1964 Aston Martin he drove is available. This fabulous car actually comes with two machine guns but I seriously doubt you would be given permission to use them. Mind you, if you can get your hands on seven million you probably won’t have any trouble making these legit. The James Bond connection to this amazing car is just another appeal of the fabulous Aston Martin. This car truly is the king of used cars.

If you can’t afford to shell out 7 million quid on used cars don’t despair; at least not yet. This is the price that auctioneers are hoping to get for the car. It has yet to go on auction in London so when it does maybe you can get a cheaper deal. This will just depend on how much people are willing to pay and how many people are interested in it. In fact the final price could end up much higher than the estimated seven million pounds. Personally I think it will be worth every penny.

When you think it’s time to look out for used cars for sale, you are always better off trying to research your vehicles beforehand. Researching allows you to find the very best used cars for the category you are looking for. And when you finally finish your research, you could find yourself leaving the car delears with a splendid used cars dunfermline or even a used cars eastbourne.
